Recently, we observed Pink Shirt Day, an occasion aimed at combating bullying and fostering a culture of kindness. Bullying typically encompasses three key elements: it involves repeated actions or threats, has a power disparity, and is intended to cause harm to others. As outlined by Stomp Out Bullying, individuals who engage in bullying tend to dominate, blame, and manipulate others while lacking empathy and foresight. They often harbor disdain for those perceived as weaker and target them without acknowledging the repercussions of their behavior. Their desire for power and attention drives them.
Bullying manifests in four primary forms:
Physical – such as hitting, kicking, punching, and threatening physical harm.
Verbal – including teasing, mocking, and name-calling.
Relational – like inviting others to an event while excluding someone or spreading damaging rumors.
Cyberbullying – involving the sending, posting, or sharing of negative and harmful false information about individuals.
Victims of bullying are more susceptible to mental health challenges, including depression and anxiety, as well as physical health concerns, including sleep disturbances and a decreased interest in activities they once enjoyed. Additionally, they may find it challenging to adjust in school. The long-term effects of bullying can lead to issues such as low self-esteem, a negative outlook on life, and feelings of helplessness.
As adults and parents, we believe it is our duty to foster a respectful environment for our children. In our pursuit of creating a peaceful and compassionate community, we openly discuss the issue of bullying, promote diversity and inclusion, condemn bullying behavior, and actively discourage disrespectful actions.
Intervening in cases of bullying is crucial for anyone who witnesses such incidents. As bystanders, it's vital to speak out, inform teachers or adults about what occurred, and demonstrate support for the victims collectively. This solidarity reassures the victim that they are not alone, helping to boost their self-esteem and making them feel supported, thereby fostering a safer environment. Additionally, this sends a clear message to the bully that their behavior is unacceptable, and their victims have allies.
Lately, I have been disheartened by the changes in the world since January 20, 2025. We worked diligently to cultivate a community grounded in kindness, empathy, harmony, and peace, yet one powerful individual has acted in stark contrast to those values. His actions stir chaos, exhibit blatant disrespect, resort to offensive language, drive personal agendas, and much more. Those who are bullied continue to endure suffering in our society; will we, as bystanders, step up to the challenge and help restore kindness, harmony, peace, and humanity to our world?
We teach our children to confront bullying rather than just be bystanders. We also equip them with strategies to protect themselves from becoming targets. Will we truly embody these values? I eagerly anticipate witnessing how adults worldwide can become inspiring role models, showcasing practical lessons for our kids.
I take great pride in being a CANADIAN, a country that champions love, kindness, compassion, and peace.
May PEACE be upon you all, and may JUSTICE be restored!
